Service is Our Middle Name

Significant service is vital to the character of GLOSS. We serve God by serving others and value the importance of giving back to our communities. We don’t do it for recognition, or to receive accolades, it’s simply our duty as Christians to set self aside and be a blessing to others. Pastor Rick Warren notes in his book A Purpose Driven life, that:

“Self-promotion and Servanthood don’t mix…”

The young ladies of GLOSS take great pride in their service activities and they also have fun! In May, the Woodbridge Chapter participated in the Relay for Life at Garfield High School. GLOSS teamed up with the “AKA’s – Ivies for Life” team, which included members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. Over 4 million people in countries around the world raise funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay for Life movement.

The DC/MD chapter was also busy in their community, as they partnered with the Westat Volunteer Team and Hands On DC  for their May Work-a-Thon, to paint doors at Smothers Elementary school in Northeast, DC. Hands on DC, is a volunteer, nonprofit organization that organizes projects to improve the physical condition of Washington, DC public schools.

The Georgia chapter made encouraging cards and belated Mother’s Day cards. The cards were placed in care packages that were delivered to women in shelters by   The Next Chapter Widow’s Ministry (an organization that GLOSS volunteers with).

Since the inception of GLOSS, significant service has been at the forefront of everything GA_serviceconducted by GLOSS. Over the years GLOSS (all chapters) has served the following

organizations:

  • Envoy (senior nursing home)
  • Hands On DCwoodbridgeservice
  • Hands On Atlanta
  • Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church (back to school drive registration)
  • Relay for Life
  • Positive Passtime (community resource center)
  • Uni Health (senior nursing home)
  • Embraced Atlanta (collect, sort and redistributes orthopaedic equipment to individuals in need)
  • St. Francis Table Soup Kitchen
  • Project Open Hand (meals on wheels program)
  • Sugar Creek Community Garden
  • MedShare (bridging gap between medical surplus and need)

GLOSS conducts service events every month, and we’re always looking for some place new and different to volunteer. Feel free to share with us any service events that you know of in the Maryland, DC and Virginia area as well as Georgia.

Celebrating Mothers

GLOSS 2013 M-Day Cards

|Celebrating Mothers|

Each year, countries around the world celebrate one of its dearest assets…..mothers!  Mothers are the precious beings that nurture and deliver new life.  They are often the ones that pray diligently for us and attend all the major hallmarks in our lives—birthdays, recitals, graduations.  As girl journeys through the multiple phases of life, her mother’s role will evolve from “parent” to “advisor”, from helping soothe knee scrapes to soothing heart aches.  Through every phase, a mother remains significant and should always be cherished.  My heart warms when I think of the GLOSS Moms!  These ladies allow us to teach, inspire and challenge their daughters every week during Butterfly Café.  They trust our Godly leadership and the vision of GLOSS.  Though I have no children of my own yet {waiting for my “Boaz” lol!}, my own mother blessed me this past Mother’s Day by sharing this with me: “Happy Mother’s Day to the one who accepted one of the most awesome responsibilities of motherhood—teaching the children to accept only God’s best for their lives!  You will have children all around the world.  Proud to be your mom!”  To all mothers, grandmothers, aunts, godmothers and women who help give life and pave the way for the girls in their journey, I celebrate you! Happy Belated Mommy’s Day!

Butterfly Moments with Cherise

Greetings!

It’s an exciting time for GLOSS!  We are 4 months away from celebrating our 7th anniversary and we are just a couple weeks away from the launch of our 3rd chapter located in the Washington, DC/Maryland area!!  God is so awesome!!  He has given GLOSS fantastic volunteers—Chapter Directors, Phase Coaches, Service Project Coordinators and supporters to help young ladies blossom through the multiple phases of life.

As Executive Director, I often analyze GLOSS’s effectiveness.  Our impact is affirmed when I listen to parents talk about how GLOSS helped their daughters love themselves more or how GLOSS helped them be more confident and aware of their value.  It is affirmed when I see volunteers faithfully serving in their roles.  It is affirmed each time I witness a GLOSS member bring a new friend into our sisterhood.  Whenever I begin to worry about the present or the future of GLOSS, the Holy Spirit reminds me that it was God who gave me the ideas to start GLOSS and He is faithful to complete the work He has begun!  Knowing that truth assures me that there is so much in store GLOSS—more Christ-centered young ladies to influence, more cities to expand in to, more service projects to complete, more volunteers to recruit, more resources to be obtained and more resources to be allocated!

GLOSS Rocks!!!
